Lockouts do not keep office hours. If you are locked out late, here is a practical order to work through.
1. Stay safe
Wait somewhere lit and populated if you can. If you feel unsafe, call 911.
2. Look for an easy way in
Check other doors and windows you can reach safely. Do not climb or break glass; injuries cost far more than a lockout.
3. Think about spares
A roommate, family member or neighbor may have a key. For rentals, try the property manager's after-hours number.
4. Call a locksmith
The phone line here is listed as open all day, every day. Give your address and describe the lock. The dispatcher will give you an estimate and a realistic idea of when a locksmith can reach you.
5. Plan for next time
- Leave a spare with someone you trust.
- Consider a keypad deadbolt so a code always gets you in.
- If keys are lost, rekey rather than worry about who has them.
Lockouts start at $19 plus the $29 service call fee. See apartment lockouts and car lockouts.
