Office Lockout: A Calm Checklist

An office lockout costs time and sometimes sales. A short checklist helps.

Work through these first

  1. Ask colleagues and the building manager whether anyone has a key or the code.
  2. Check the alarm company or property management, which may have access.
  3. Check other entrances you are allowed to use.

When you call a locksmith

  • Say whether it is a storefront, office or warehouse, and the type of lock if you know it.
  • Be ready to show ID and proof that you are authorized to enter, such as a lease, business card or a call to the owner.
  • Ask for an estimate that includes the service call fee.

Stop it happening again

  • Keep a spare key in a secure key box off site, or with a trusted manager.
  • Consider keyless entry on the main door.
  • If keys have gone missing, rekey the affected locks.

Commercial lockouts start at $19 plus the $29 service call fee. See commercial locksmith services and why call a pro for business lockouts.
